Deafness and medicine


Compulsory hearing screening tests have been carried out in every newborn baby since 2002. This allows for early detection of hearing impairments and quick medical intervention. If there are very severe inner ear hearing impairments, medicine has so far not found a solution for the treatment of this type of disorder.

When there is an opportunity to transmit electrical impulses and process sounds in the inner ear, cochlear implantation is the rescue.Sign language is an important part of the life and normal functioning of deaf people. His learning should start as early as possible. In Poland, there are over 30 institutions specializing in the education of the deaf and hard of hearing, which enables them to function normally in society.

It also gives a sense of community with other deaf people. People with hearing impairments were taught by: Tomas Braidwood, priest Charles-Michel de L’Épée, Samuel Heinicke. In Poland, it was Father Jakub Falkowski, who founded the Institute of the Deaf in Warsaw, which functions to this day.

It is estimated that there are 200-300 sign languages ​​in use in the world, the number of which is constantly growing. They contain their own vocabulary and grammar rules.

As a natural language, it is absorbed by a deaf child by learning to sign (ideographic signs), i.e. performing strictly defined gestures and hand movements, taking into account facial expressions as well as torso and head movements.
